
The ANIMALS/BLUE SERIES consists of seven Activity workshops containig
a total of 40 individual manipulative activities that reinforce simple
vocabulary and sight words, sentence structure, and short text comprehension.
When used as a whole-class activity, the BLUE SERIES promotes learning
experiences which lead to social as well as personal discovery. Complete
Reference Guides explain each Activity Workshop in detail -- from basic
utilisation, outcomes and objectives, to suggested variations and extension
activities, to the specific color or shape coding differentiating the manipulative
pieces of each activity packet.
The teacher is encouraged to refer to these guides and model the use
of each Workshop before introducing the BLUE SERIES as a whole-class activity.
Two 45-minute long Activity Workshop sessions per week will provide students
with seven to eight weeks of exciting and motivating reading experiences
that respect individual learning styles and paces. Five minutes of clean-up
time at the end of each Workshop session will encourage cooperative responsibility
while ensuring that all material is properly put away. Each Activity
Workshop in the ANIMALS/BLUE SERIES is identified by a title and symbol.

THE HEN HUNTS...
A cloze activity
Each of five activity packets includes six illustration-cards, six missing-word
sentence strips, and one missing-verb list card. Students match sentences
to silly illustrations of animals involved in everyday activities, predict
and select the missing verb. Instruction cards, answer keys, and Reference
Guide included.

THE SHEEP SEES...
An observation activity
Each of five humorous, oversized illustration cards is accompanied by
an activity packet enclosing a short text/instruction card and 20 word
cards. Students read the short texts, identify ten objects or errors in
the illustration, and select the word cards associated with these objects.

THE RABBIT PLAYS...
A domino/association activity
Students develop reasoning skills as they complete a chain of 16 word/image
dominoes. Students match the image on one domino with a word, describing
an associated object, on another, discovering the links between the two.
Illustration cards corresponding to the words may be placed over the word
side of each domino to simplify the activity. Instruction cards, answer
keys, and Reference Guide included.

THE CAT WRITES...
A write-on/wipe-off crossword activity
Ten oversized, theme-oriented crossword puzzles are each illustrated
with five stimulating picture clues. Activity packet includes ten corresponding
text cards incorporating the five picture-clue words into a meaningful
context. Students read texts and use magic markers (included) to write
answers directly onto their puzzles. Once completed and corrected, puzzle
easily wipes clean with a moist towel. Answer keys and Reference Guide
included.

A classifying activity
Each of five activity packets allows students to develop reasoning skills
as they classify 20 colorful illustration cards into four distinct groups,
then match word cards to corresponding images. Answer keys and Reference
Guide listing multiple extension activities included.

THE COW CONNECTS...
A sentence building activity
Each of five activity packets contains four whimsical illustrations
and four corresponding, colour-coded sentence strips cut into word cards.
Students observe illustrations and constructs sentences associated to them,
reinforcing awareness of word order and punctuation in a sentence. Instruction
cards, answer keys, and Reference Guide included.

THE HORSE CUTS OUT...
A cut and paste activity
Five simple, descriptive texts are each accompanied by a colorful cut-out
sheet illustrating the body parts of two similar but different characters.
Students choose a sheet, read the corresponding text, and select the particular
pieces required to construct the character described in the text. 35 cut-out
sheets (seven each of five designs) and Reference Guide included. Additional
cut-out sheet packets sold separately.

The Teacher’s Guide describes the material, the learning objectives, the procedures to follow and makes different suggestions for using the material.
STUDENT NOTEBOOK
The child-friendly structure of the Student Notebook enables children
to organize their written responses as they work independently, while allowing
the teacher to easily evaluate individual progress. Compact and attractive,
teh Student Notebook is highly recommended when using the complete ANIMALS/BLUE
SERIES as a whole-class activity.
WORKSHOP WHEEL
The Workshop Wheel is a helpful tool for organizing Activity Workshop
sessions in the classroom. With a spin of the numbered inner wheel, students
divided into groups 1 through 7 can quickly identify the Activity Workshop
symbol corresponding to their team.
